BACKGROUND

The Fletcher FU-24 was designed for the Sargent-Fletcher Corp, El Monte, CA, USA by John Thorp (T-15). It made its first flight on 14/6/54 and was targeted at the New Zealand topdressing market.

Only four aircraft,c/n 001, 007, 089, 102 were completed by Fletcher in USA. Then up to c/n 105, they were supplied in kit form and assembled in NZ, by Cable-Price Corp at Hamilton, with a few sub-contracted to James or TEAL. Cable-Price became Air Parts (NZ) in 1962 and bought the manufacturing rights in 1964. Air Parts merged with Aero Engine Services Ltd (AESL) (builders of Airtourers) to form NZ Aerospace Industries (NZAI) in April 1973. This was in turn reorganised in July 1982, also incorporating the engineering department of James Aviation, as Pacific Aerospace Corporation Ltd (PAC), all at Hamilton. Following a financial restructuring in November 2006, the company was further renamed as Pacific Aerospace Ltd (PAL).

The structure is modular to facilitate repair, and so sub-assemblies have become interchanged. A few airframe kits were used for spares without ever appearing as complete aircraft. Some kits were stored for several years before being assembled.

Several were assembled or rebuilt by various engineering companies. The major ones were: JAL = James Aviation Ltd at Hamilton, WAW = Wanganui Aero Work at Wanganui, TEAL = Tasman Empire Airways Ltd at Auckland. Some hybrid rebuilds had builder-related non-standard c/ns.

A variety of piston engines from both Continental and Lycoming were used. These started with 225 hp in the prototype and progressively increased in power, while many aircraft were retrospectively upgraded. The final production version had a 400 hp Lycoming IO-720. So far 23 have been re-engined with Walter M601D turbines from about 1999, along with six P&W PT6A from 2006. The NZ CAA register website does not list engines fitted, and so there is no ready source of which have been converted to turbine. Those which have come to light, e.g. from internet photos, have been noted, but the listing is incomplete.

A few prototypes were produced with turbine engines, culminating in 1979 with the Cresco. This has an enlarged and strengthened fuselage to take a 2-ton payload. 38 aircraft were built ending in August 2003. Some Crescos were adapted for parachute or survey work. The first few had Lycoming LTP-101 600 hp engines, then most had PT6A-34AG 750 hp engines.

The prototype of the PAC 750XL flew in 2001. This is marketed as the first purpose-designed sky-diving aircraft, though pax/utility, survey and top-dressing versions are also offered. It is was derived from Cresco components round a passenger cabin, and with a 750 hp PT6A turbine engine.
